“x reader” fics are potentially really profitable sites for getting at what the default heterosexual ‘female’ body looks and behaves like in the cultural imagery of the current era. have we considered this

• sometimes “female reader” is tagged; but, if not tagged, this is what is assumed
• the “female” reader has breasts and a vulva
• the “female” reader has a vagina that can be penetrated (she is not intersex, does not have vaginismus, etc.)
• the “female” reader is physically small. she has “dainty” hands and “delicate” genitalia
• the “female” reader is white. she has “pink” nipples and genitals
• if there is any deviation from this standard in the reader-proxy’s body, it will be explicitly tagged for (e.g. “chubby reader”)

of course this is predictable and not particularly interesting, except insofar as the idea that this proxy is the reader can create some very jarring effects when the reader is not some of these things.

a character can diverge from the reader in some ways, even if they are pretty clearly meant to be a reader-proxy; but an “x reader” fic explicitly tells you that you are physically dainty, that you are short, that you have “pink” features, and expects this to cause no friction. what’s interesting about it is that it is so assumed, so under-the-radar, so unproblematised. the writer presumably doesn’t know they’re doing it.

you see this very clearly in what is and is not tagged for. “chubby reader” is tagged because not-thin is a 'thing’ about somebody’s body—a specificity that is acknowledged as having the potential to cause friction if the reader is thin (on the flip side, a specificity that some readers may want to explicitly search for). but “white reader” is not tagged, even when certain details point that way, because “white” is not a 'thing’ about somebody’s body in the same way. the “female” reader is white by default.
